Eurographics, the European Association for Computer Graphics, has honoured Professor Markus Gross, head of the Computer Graphics Laboratory at ETH Zurich, with the Eurographics Medal 2024.
He has been recognised for his research contributions in geometry processing, physically-based simulation and face capturing and animation. Markus Gross has effectively connected industry and academia, leading to the creation of several start-ups. Since sixteen years, he has been leading Disney Research | Studios in Zurich, positioning it as a significant contributor to international research by applying academic findings and sharing new insights. His efforts have solidified ETH's position on the global stage in computer graphics research, with many of his former students and postdoctoral scholars making significant contributions of their own.
Eurographics established the Gold Medal Award in 2016, granted to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the goals of Eurographics, both scientific and organisational.
Markus Gross is a Professor of Computer Science and the head of the Computer Graphics Laboratory at ETH Zurich. He received a degree in electrical and computer engineering and his doctorate in computer graphics and image analysis, both from the University of Saarbrucken, Germany. He joined ETH Zurich in 1994 as an assistant professor and became a full professor in 1997. Since 2008, he has been the director of Disney Research | Studios in Zurich. In 2018, he became Vice-President of Research at the Walt Disney Studios, and in 2022, Chief Scientist. Markus Gross’s research interests include point-based graphics, physics-based modeling, multiresolution analysis and virtual reality. He has widely published and lectured on computer graphics and scientific visualisation.
Markus Gross is a fellow of the ACM and of the Eurographics Association. He is a recipient of the Eurographics Outstanding Technical Contributions Award (2010), the Konrad Zuse Medal of GI (2013), the Karl Heinz Beckurts Price (2013), the IEEE Visualization Distinguished Career Award (2015), and the Eurographics Distinguished Career Award (2018). The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences honored his research with two technical achievement awards in 2013 and 2019 and welcomed him as a member-at-large in 2020. In 2021 he received the prestigious Steven Anson Coons Award for outstanding creative contributions to computer graphics.
